This is not a signal service. While endeavoring to post signals before time occasionally I will only be able to post signals a day or two late

I am not a financial adviser. Some of these are paper trades. I am not suggesting you follow these signals. If you take any action based on my blog you do so at your own risk.

Long term wealth creation - background.

My own investments are held in a portfolio much like the Easy system as well as a slowly growing longer term holding similar to that outlined below.

Our starting position was $200,000. The investment scenario is to have two quite different active investing styles that feed a long term buy and hold style.

  1. Easy System - A trend following system on the ASX 300 using weekly charts and trailing stops.
  2. Monthly Momo - A momentum system aims to hold the top ten stocks in the ASX 100 when it is on and nothing when off.
  3. Long Term - A buy and hold strategy based on index funds fed by dividend re-investment of the index funds themselves and the stocks in the above two systems.

The starting position for this blog allocated $95,000 to each of the first two strategies and $10,000 to the long term.

Easy Share Trading System.

System Status: ON (As at 20th October 2019)

Take new positions. Trailing stops EMA 7 < EMA 12.

System details.

These trades are based on Peter Castle's 'Easy share trading system' with a few of my own tweaks. On his web site he kindly provides quite a few details on how his system works and a list of trade entry's each week which I will be using to run these trades here.

Peter also has an e-book with much more detail and explanation of his system and trading in general. I haven't read the book but encourage you to do so if you are new to trading.

  1. Only trade the Top 300 shares on the ASX. Only open positions when the system is on.
  2. Current Position Size = $6,000
  3. Select stocks priced between 10 cents and 20 dollars - theoretical price leverage.
  4. Buy the cheapest stock(s) on Peters 52 week high page assuming he continues listing them, Alternatively, buy the cheapest stock(s) in the ASX 300 making a 1 year high. For example: Friday's close is higher than last Friday's 50 week upper Donchian Channel That's the buy signal. Use around 10% of total capital each week until you have a portfolio 100% in equities. The aim is to fill your book in 10 weeks from when the system turns on and have between 15 and 25 stocks.
  5. Sell any stock if the EMA 7 falls below the EMA 12
  6. Now re-employ that money into further stock(s) using the same rules as 1 to 4.
  7. Any purchase should have a minimum $500,000 a day turnover (for my trading size).
  8. Use XAO_AX Daily EMA 20 and Daily EMA 30 as an on off switch. This should smooth the equity curve even though it will probably also reduce returns a little.

Monthly Momentum System.

  2. Buy the 10 highest momentum ASX 100 stocks in equal weights. Momentum is defined by the 30 day EMA of the 180 day ROC.
  3. Stop Loss Rules.

    • System off - Close all positions
  4. Note - I am not trading this system (at the moment) but I will be updating each weekend just like the others - remember This is NOT a signal service

Chart(s) of the Week

FXL.

Not much to say about this one. There was an entry signal, we took it, stop loss hit so we sold it. A lot of our trades will either make or lose a little while we let some of them make a lot and, hopefully, none of them lose a lot.

Performance.

Chart(s) of the Week

IFM.

One can see from this chart that IFM has had 5 buy signals since last March. Due to our starting date we have picked up the last one which turned out to lose money. Had we picked up the first one it would have shown us a 60% profit in 9 months with grins all round. This is the nature of trading and one must un-emotionally dump anything hitting a stop loss and move on because it is persistence that wins in the end.

Chart(s) of the Week

QAN.

It is still very early days in this version of running the portfolio. Whenever nothing much has happened I will try to show a chart of the longest held stock in the Easy or Momo system.

This week the honors fall to QAN. Even it has only been running around 2 months so there isn't much to show yet.

As a rough guide we can expect some of the Easy trades to last around 2 years using the 7/12 weekly EMA stop loss. From memory the average trade lasts nearly one year.

Chart(s) of the Week

Performance Vs All Ords.

The balance of the portfolios is down at the moment. We can't expect a trading system to be positive from the very start. It's a bonus if it is but this is a marathon rather than a sprint.

The reason why this is often the case is because of the nature of the Easy and Momo systems. They are trend trades and trends take time to reward us while the losses tend to fall of the perch early on. Any decent strategy delivers profits in the long term but the short term is nothing but a coin flip.

BEN & NCK

Both good examples of the above. The Easy system was on, both gave an entry signal and then weakened until they met the stop loss conditions and we sold them. They were both good trades.

Chart(s) of the Week

APX and MVF - Two good trades - Different results.

Both these trades were closed out on Peter Castle's system on 30th Aug 2019. One made nearly 50% profit, the other lost nearly 30%. They were both successful trades because they followed the plan. Winning or losing on an individual trade doesn't define success. Any trade can lose because we cannot predict the future. Following the plan is the only thing that allows us to become profitable over the long term.

Disclaimer - Read this first!

The only new signal on Peter Castle's page this week was involved in a corporate restructure and selling off assets. While this was obviously well received I don't see these as legitimate buying signals and so I am not taking this one.

That was short and not so sweet. It can be annoying when a bull/bear filter gives us a short term signal but it's part of the cost of doing business. We need to remember that this style of trading is all about the long term and in the long term little blips like this will be forgotten. Depending on Monday's opening prices the total loss for this foray into the momentum system should be under 4% of the capital involved. We will revert to 100% cash and wait for another opportunity.

We replaced these last week - like most trades that fall out of a system early they both lost money.
